Become a Citizen Scientist: Donate your computer's spare power to research

-

Researchers are pooling computers worldwide to solve complex scientific problems that advance our understanding of protein folding, P53 mutations, epigenetics, and disease mechanisms.

Folding At Home is a distributed computing project that harnesses the collective power of volunteers' personal computers to help scientists study diseases and develop new treatments.

Your Computer = Research Lab

Transform idle computer time into valuable contributions to protein folding research and disease understanding.

Real Scientific Impact

Help researchers study P53 tumor suppressor proteins, epigenetic factors, and complex molecular interactions.

Installation Instructions

  1. Download the Program

Visit https://foldingathome.org/ and click the big "Start Folding" button, then "Download for Windows". The website will automatically detect your processor type (AMD or Intel).

  2. Install Folding@Home

Run the downloaded installer file (something like "fah_client_8.4.9_AMD64.exe"). If Windows asks for permission, click "Yes" and follow the installation wizard.

  3. Join Our Team

Team Name: Scott's Supercomputer SquadronTeam ID: 1066841

When setting up your identity in the program, search for our team name to join the squadron!

  4. Configure Your Settings

Choose your folding power level (Light, Medium, or Full) and set when to fold. We recommend "Only when idle" so it doesn't interfere with your regular computer use.

  5. Start Contributing

Click "Start Folding" and watch as your computer begins contributing to important medical research. You'll see progress bars showing the work being completed.

Important Notes:

  • Performance: Your computer may run warmer and fans may run more - this is normal
  • Control: You can pause or stop folding at any time
  • Energy: Running Folding@Home will increase electricity usage somewhat
  • Research Focus: Projects typically focus on cancer and Alzheimer's research
